  Abstract: Recently, there has been a growing interest in searching for novel high-performance thermoelectric material which can produce the electrical energy from the waste heat and be also used as an active cooling system. The efficiency and coefficient of performance of the thermoelectric module consisted of thermoelectric materials are directly related to the dimensionless ZT (ZT=α2T/ρκ). The best thermoelectric materials commercially available today have a value of ZT~1. Though this value is acceptable for specific applications, the enhanced value is required to expand their application. Recently, lots of novel thermoelectric materials with the ZT values about 1.5~2.2 are developed and ignite the relevant academic and industrials society for realization of the thermoelectric technologies. In this presentation, we will introduce our recent achievement in the development of the novel thermoelectric materials with the enhanced properties. The values of ZT over 1.5 were obtained in both p- and n-type thermoelectric materials in the mid-temperature range, which may raise the possibility of the utilization of the thermoelectric materials in the waste heat recovery from an automobile and an industrial factory. The enhanced ZT was mainly attributed to the existence of the nano-sized precipitates or defect-like structures. We will also introduce the utilization of the computational simulation for understanding the thermoelectric properties.
