  Abstract:

Biomechanics mainly deals with stress-growth relation, that is, biological tissues and organs grow up in a stress field to possess their functions and stress distributions in the tissues and organs comply the need of functional optimization under physiological environments. Mechanobiology aims to understand the mechano-biological coupling, which focuses on defining mechanically-sensitive molecules and elucidating cellular responses induced by mechanical environment via transducing mechanical signals into chemical/biological signaling. Mechanochemistry tends to quantify how external force regulates the dissociation and binding kinetics of molecular interactions. In this presentation, multi-scale mechanobiological or mechanochemical approaches are integrated in unraveling the underlying mechanisms in inflammatory cascade and tumor metastasis. Specifically, the interplay of stem cell pluripotency and the niche microenvironment is discussed in the field of engineered tissue construction.
