报告摘要:
Boron cluster compounds are attractive candidates as high temperature thermoelectric materials for their stability and large Seebeck coefficients and low thermal conductivity. The physical properties of boron cluster compounds can be controlled to some degree through incorporation of metal atoms in the voids of clusters, and addition of third elements like C, N, Si which can act as bridging sites of the cluster framework.  Yttrium borosilicide single crystals grown by floating zone method and its measured thermoelectric properties exhibit anisotropy. Although many borides are being developed as thermoelectric materials, there has been no report regarding the anisotropy of thermoelectric properties of borides. During synthesis of YB44Si2 at 1970 K, silicon was melted and evaporated before reacting with YB4. The grown crystal was a strikingly metal-rich phase of YB66, and it was YB47. After getting YB47 single crystal, YB48 single crystal grown purposely and studied thermoelectric properties. The reported homogeneity region of YB66 was YB56 to YB68 and it is extended YB48 to YB68. YB66 had been reported to be a poor thermoelectric material but thermoelectric measurements of the metal-rich phase YB48 showed 30 times higher ZT than conventional YB66 and takes a value of approximately 0.1 at 990 K which is a promising start as a new high temperature material. This dramatic expansion of homogeneity region in a well-known boride, accompanying striking physical properties, is exciting and shows the still untapped potential of the material.
