Abstract

Novel inorganic nanotubes made of boron nitride, silica, magnesium and zinc oxides, and so forth, have attracted significant attention in recent years.  In this work, we fully take an advantage of the state-of-the-art high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) for the detailed analysis of atomic and electronic structures of these novel nanotubes, and dedicated STM-TEM and AFM-TEM piezo-driven holders for pioneering physical property measurements. A special emphasis is put on the world-first analysis of electromechanical response of individual multi-walled BNNTs. Recent theoretical works have predicted the possibility of deformation-driven band-gap tuning and piezoelectricity in BNNTs, however, these intriguing findings have never been verified experimentally before the present work. Herein, we indeed demonstrate the striking effects of tensile, compressive and bending deformation on the electrical response of BNNTs under manipulation and electrical probing in HRTEM. These effects, in fact, include but are not limited to piezoelectricity in deformed BNNTs. In addition, BNNT bending forces are directly measured inside HRTEM and real-time video-recording of elastic kinking deformation (that reveals a superb BNNT flexibility) is performed.
