Non-silica oxide glass fibers for fiber lasers

Abstract
Fiber lasers have attracted significant attentions recently, which are gradually replacing traditional solid-state lasers in many applications.  Non-silica glasses exhibit many unique features which can be utilized to develop fiber lasers with exceptional performances. For instance, phosphate glasses exhibit high phonon energy, leading to an efficient energy transfer from Yb to Er ions. Germanate and tellurite glasses have low phonon energy compare to silica, resulting in higher quantum efficiency for 2 micron fiber lasers. Importantly, non-silica oxide glasses typically have much stronger photo-darkening resistance than silica glass, which could be critical for many applications. Advantages and disadvantages of non-silica oxide glass fibers for fiber laser applications will be summarized and discussed. Applications of resulted fiber lasers will be presented as well.

Dr. Shibin Jiang is President of AdValue Photonics Inc. and Adjunct Research Professor at College of Optical Sciences, University of Arizona. Before he founded AdValue Photonics Inc in June 2007, he served as Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of NP Photonics Inc. Dr. Jiang obtained his Ph.D. degree from Universite de Rennes 1, France in 1996, and has more than 100 publications in the area of photonic glasses and devices including more than 25 invited talks, 14 proceedings books and 26 issued US patents. He served as chair, co-chair, session chair, and committee member of more than 25 international conferences. Currently he serves as topic editor/member of editorial board of three scientific journals, and guest professor for several universities. He is the recipient of the Gottardi Price from International Commission on Glass (ICG) in 2005. Dr. Jiang was elected a Fellow of SPIE (International Society of Optical Engineering) in 2005 and Fellow of The American Ceramic Society in 2008.
