Abstract:

Multi-functional materials can respond to more than one external stimulus. Here, we will present advances in multiferroic epitaxial oxides prepared by laser deposition, self-assembling chemical methods, and polymer-assistance. We have achieved (i) giant magnetoelectricity in two-phase self-assembled CoFe2O4/BaTiO3 thin layers grown on Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-x%PbTiO3 single crystal substrates due to a domain rotation induced strain: with values of the magnetoelectric susceptibility approaching that of laminated ME composites; (ii) vertical integration of various two phase epitaxial oxides on wide band gap substrates, offering unique types of multifunctionality including semiconducting/piezoelectric amongst others; (iii) electrically and magnetically tunability of the magnetic anisotropy; and (iv) giant magnetoelectricity in heterostructural layers of piezoelectric PZT and ZnO epitaxially grown on magnetostrictive Metglas foils. The results offer an approach to a complete electromagnetic material, via different deposition methods: which could have important ramifications in sensors, voltage reading of spin states, power electronics, antennas, and memristors/gyrators.
