Abstract: We developed high-quality single fluoride crystals by Czochralski technique. This activity covers different applications such as IR and visible laser, solid state crycooler, RX detection and solid state crycooler and Metrologic application. The active parts of these devices are insulator hosts containing fluorine doped with trivalent rare earths to develop solid state laser in the UV, visible and near infrared wavelength region. We have investigated the spectroscopic properties and energy transfer mechanisms to tune high-efficiency IR tunable lasers (about 300 nm) in CW and pulsed operation regime. Also we investigated LiYF4 crystal doped with Yb3+and showed for the first time the development of solid state crycooler with the possibility to rise cryogenic temperature. By the same materials we have investigated laser emission in the visible region by fluoride crystal doped with Pr3+ and Dy3+ and showed the potential applications for optical atomic clock. It has been showed for the first time the yellow CW laser emission by fluoride crystals. Moreover by a relatively new grow technique: m-PD, monocrystal fibers have been developed, in particular it has been showed for the first time high efficiency 2 mm CW laser by fluoride materials.

Prof. Mauro Tonelli is the coordinator of the research group “New Materials for Laser Applications” operating at the Physics Department of Pisa University. Moreover his group is included in the laboratory “National Enterprise for nanoScience and nanoTechnology (NEST)” of Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and CNR- Nanoscience Istitute. His research activity is started to develop molecular gas lasers in the far-infrared region (70 µm – 1mm). He studied the color center laser characteristics in the 1.5 – 2.9 µm wavelength region. He studied fluoride crystals doped with trivalent rare-earth ions (Er, Tm and Ho) used as active elements inside a laser cavity to develop laser sources in the wavelength region from 1.2 µm to 2.1 µm. Moreover he characterized oxide and fluoride crystals doped with rare earth ions by observing their static and dynamic fluorescence for the optical chacterization of these materials. He has developed a facility to growth the bulk fluoride crystals doped with trivalent rare earth ions by the Czochralski technique. The samples are of high optical quality and a high laser efficiency and tunability in the UV, visible and near-infrared wavelength region has been obtained. Moreover he set up the new growth apparatus (m-Pd) to develop mono-crystal fibers. By this technique he has developed fibers (diameter from 500 m to 3 mm) with different materials as silicon, fluoride and oxide doped with rare earth ions ( Ce3+, Nd3+, Tm3+, Yb3+and Er3+) for medical, mechanical and laser applications. He is also working in the Virgo gravitational interferometer on optical detection systems. He is co-author of more 300 papers published on refereed books and scientific journals; he is co-author of five patents for optics and optoelectronic applications.
