Abstract: In the report the most widely used methods for surface composition analysis are observed. The physical principles of the method of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), its advantages and capabilities are considered. Examples of the XPS application for research of nanostructures, crystal surfaces, thin films, and in ceramic technology are given. The review of modern commercial instruments is made.

Dr. Mariya Dobrotvorska was born on March 12, 1958, in Ekaterinburg, Russia. She graduated from Urals State University, Russia. In 1990 she defended Ph.D. Thesis in Phys. and Math. at Institute for Single Crystals, NAS of Ukraine (Physics of Solid State). She works at Institute for Single Crystals, NAS of Ukraine from 1993. Now she is Senior Researcher of Department of Crystalline Materials of Complex Compounds. Her research activity is devoted to investigations of composition and electron structure of nanoparticles, thin films, crystal and ceramics surface with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, studying oxide optical ceramics (rare-earth doped Y2O3, Y3Al5O12, etc.). She participated in a number of domestic Projects, as well as bilateral International Projects.
